The untold stories of the Reconstruction Period, during and following the Civil War, have been buried in the annals of history for too many years while many of the often mis-told and misunderstood stories are still taught to our children.
The Second Founding of America: Reconstruction Beaufort is a not-for-profit corporation, working in collaboration with The Community Foundation of the Lowcountry. Public Hearing for Reconstruction Era National Monument
Congressmen James Clyburn and Mark Sanford, Secretary of Interior Bruce Babbitt, renowned scholar Dr. Eric Foner, and citizens from Beaufort, SC and beyond gathered together to understand the important untold and often mis-told stories of Reconstruction by proposing a Monument in Beaufort, SC. To the left is pictured a public hearing at Brick Baptist Church on St Helena Island, SC on December 15, 2016, where an overflow of participants asked in unison that the "truth be told."
